The extraction rate of biomass is an important indicator, which determines the utilization efficiency of biomass and land resources.

Data analysis from Aarhus University/AU; when the protein extraction rate is 40%, agricultural innovation technologies can be used to increase alfalfa yield and protein content, reducing the area needed for cultivation. For example, if yield and protein content is increased to 14 tons/hectare and 20%, the alfalfa cultivation area can be reduced from 979,000 hectares to 504,000 hectares.

If the extraction method is improved, when the protein extraction rate reaches 70%, the alfalfa planting area can be reduced from 979,000 hectares to 559,429 hectares. Combined with AU's advanced agricultural technology, the planted area can be further reduced to 360,000 hectares. Improving the protein extraction rate can greatly reduce alfalfa's planting area.

Four scenarios for growing grass to replace current soy imports for feed. A requirement of 705,000 tons of protein annually is assumed. The scenarios set out are 1) current grass production, which is optimized for fodder production for cattle, 2) optimized selection of species and management with a view to supplying biorefinery plants, 3) further research and development in breeding and optimized management of grassland crops for biorefinery as well as 4) both high grass yield and increased efficiency in refining.
